What is an ACL injury?
An ACL injury is an injury of the knee caused by the the ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) one of the major knee ligaments stabilising the knee joint located in the centre of the knee being suddenly stretched beyond it’s limits causing strain, partial tear or complete ACL tear due to quickly changing direction or twisting the knee while running, jumping and landing awkwardly, or when the knee is hit forcefully from the side usually in field sport activities. ACL injury symptoms are: A popping sound at moment of injury, sudden severe pain in centre of knee, rapid knee swelling and knee may feel unstable and can “give way” causing you to stumble or fall. ACL surgery may be required in the case of a torn ACL.
ACL injury treatment
Your physiotherapist will physically assess and test painful movements and muscle strength to diagnose grade of ACL ligament injury, use hands on physiotherapy, shockwave therapy, dry needling, and taping. Advice re avoiding or modifying certain sport activities to assist ACL recovery. Provide ACL exercises as part of your ACL rehab program via our exercise prescription software Salaso. Prescribe knee supports, kinesiology tape, resistance bands and foam roller.
