What is LCL injury?
An LCL injury is an injury of the knee caused by the Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) one of the four knee ligaments stabilising the knee joint located on the inside of the knee being suddenly stretched beyond it’s limits causing sprain, partial tear or complete LCL tear due to quickly changing direction or twisting the knee while running, jumping and landing awkwardly, or when the knee is hit forcefully from the inside usually during field sport activities. LCL injury symptoms are: A popping sound at moment of injury in certain cases, sudden pain on outside of knee, rapid knee swelling and tenderness mostly on outside, knee locking/catching and a feeling of the knee “giving way”.
LCL injury treatment
Your physiotherapist will physically assess and test painful movements and muscle strength to diagnose grade of LCL ligament injury, use hands on physiotherapy, shockwave therapy, dry needling, and taping. Advise re avoiding or modifying certain sport activities. Provide LCL knee exercises via our exercise prescription software Salaso. Prescribe knee supports, kinesiology tape, resistance bands and foam roller.
